May 14: Cleaning of the Statues of Basho and Sora
The two statues were cleaned prior to May 16, corresponding to March 27 of the Japanese Lunar Calendar, when Basho and Sora visited Soka, the departure day of their journey of "Oku-no Hosomichi." The cleaning was led by members of the Soka-shuku Shinmei-an operating committee and the Soka City Oku-no Hosomichi citizens promotion committee.
About 60 people participated, including Mr. MUGIKURA Tadahiko, the sculptor living in Soka City and creator of the statues, who joined the cleaning.
Ms. KITAMURA Yuna (age 8), who participated or the first time, said with a smile, "I a.m. happy the statues are clean now."
