Tales of Soka: Celebrated the 60th anniversary

Soka City celebrated the 60th anniversary of the municipal system on November 1.
This corner shows the history and transition of Soka.

Kasai Yosui (Artificial Ditch) with Rows of Cherry Trees

The artificial ditch of 3.5 km in length runs in the eastern part of Soka City, from Aoyagi to Inari, from north to south.
The water comes from Tone Oozeki (dam) in Gyoda City and runs through Soka City to Adachi City.
It used to supply water to rice paddy fields, but with the decrease of agricultural ground due to housing development, its role shifted to a place of relaxation for citizens.
In 1989 Soka City started redeveloping the area into an area for water-lovers, taking advantage of water and greenery.
The area was divided into three parts - the Hisaizu zone, crossing the Aoyagi district adjacent to Koshigaya City, the Aoyagi dam zone and the cherry trees zone in the Inari district - to make improvement in stages.
Especially, the area from the Aoyagi dam to the border with Yashio City, is one of the most noted spots for viewing Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms in Soka City, with about 400 cherry trees.
During the "Soka Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossoms Festival)" held in spring, the area is crowded with a lot of citizens enjoying the photographing session of cherry trees and the golden wedding celebration on a boat.
